From Eric Whitacre's website: "The Virtual Choir is a global phenomenon, creating a user-generated choir that brings together singers from around the world and their love of music in a new way through the use of technology. Singers record and upload their videos from locations all over the world. Each one of the videos is then synchronised and combined into one single performance to create the Virtual Choir." This one was released in July, 2020, in response to the pandemic.

This is a famous jazz piece, recorded in 1959, from Brubeck's quartet. They take it a little faster in this recording than it is usually played, and there's some improv in the middle that deviates from the normal melody, but I love that you can see the musicians playing. the ending (after the drum solo!) is perfect. Brubeck is on the piano. It reminds us to take 5 minutes to do something other than stare at a screen. Move your body! Play some music!
NPR reported on the album Time Out, which features this piece, a few years ago. Check it out! https://www.npr.org/2000/11/19/1114201/take-five Put your head on my shoulder
Hold me in your arms, baby Squeeze me oh-so-tight Show me that you love me too Put your lips next to mine, dear Won't you kiss me once, baby? Just a kiss goodnight, maybe You and I will fall in love (you and I will fall in love) This thing called love, I just can't handle it
This thing called love, I must get round to it I ain't ready Crazy little thing called love This thing (this thing) Called love (called love) It cries (like a baby) In a cradle all night It swings (woo woo) It jives (woo woo) It shakes all over like a jelly fish I kinda like it Crazy little thing called love There goes my baby She knows how to rock 'n' roll She drives me crazy She gives me hot and cold fever Then she leaves me in a cool cool sweat I gotta be cool, relax, get hip And get on my track's Take a back seat, hitch-hike And take a long ride on my motorbike Until I'm ready Crazy little thing called love Listen baby, ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low, ain't no river wide enough baby If you need me call me no matter where you are No matter how far, don't worry baby Just call my name I'll be there in a hurry You don't have to worry 'Cause baby there ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you babe Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow But if we are wise We know that there's always tomorrow Lean on me, when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on What I want, you've got
And it might be hard to handle But like the flame that burns the candle The candle feeds the flame, yeah yeah What I've got's full stock of thoughts and dreams that scatter You pull them all together And how, I can't explain, Oh yeah, well well you You make my dreams come true Well well you, oh yeah You make my dreams come true |
Let's Build This! It's Back to the Future! Last year, one way my students and I connected was through songs. Let's continue to make this blog page a list of songs we can share to LIFT each other UP! Please post a comment and a song (title and artist). A link to the lyrics or an audio or video clip would also be great. Archives
